GHANA ORPHANAGE
In 2013 I spent three months documenting the lives of 12 children in a small orphanage in Ghana. Located in a rural village near the city of Ho the children came from a variety of backgrounds to be cared for in a house funded by NGOs. They were cared for basically well and had more privileges than most of the other families in the village in terms of opportunities for schooling, meals and access to healthcare. Run by a large and often scary mama, the kids were on a strict routine of school, chores, dinner and homework every evening. While weekends involved cleaning, church and play. Recently Ghana revolutionized it’s orphanages and this was shut down. The children were sent away to live with extended relatives and others were put into different orphanages, no doubt massively rupturing the bonds that these children had formed over many years growing up together. Here are a few of my favorite images depicting the highs and lows of the lives of these children and the fierce sibling friendship they held.
